Listed companies: methodology and coverage

Directory coverage

860 companies listed on 33 African exchanges covered so far (A2X Markets, BODIVA (Bolsa de Dívida e Valores de Angola), Bolsa de Dívida e Valores de Angola, Bolsa de Valores de Cabo Verde, Botswana Stock Exchange, Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières, Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières (BRVM), Bourse d'Alger (SGBV), Bourse de Casablanca, Bourse de Tunis, Bourse de Tunis (BVMT), Bourse des Valeurs Mobilières de l'Afrique Centrale, Bourse des Valeurs Mobilières de l'Afrique Centrale (BVMAC), Cape Town Stock Exchange (incl. former 4AX), Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, Eswatini Stock Exchange, Ethiopian Securities Exchange, Ghana Stock Exchange, Johannesburg Stock Exchange, MERJ Exchange, Malawi Stock Exchange, Nairobi Securities Exchange, Namibian Stock Exchange, Nigerian Exchange, Nigerian Exchange (NGX), Rwanda Stock Exchange, Secdex Exchange, Somali Stock Exchange, Stock Exchange of Mauritius, Stock Exchange of Mauritius (Official Market, DEM, Africa Board, SEM-X), Uganda Securities Exchange, Victoria Falls Stock Exchange, Zimbabwe Stock Exchange). Audited annual figures are published for 691 of them; the other 169 are identity-only entries.

What an identity-only entry is. A company whose equity is listed on an exchange whose official list we collected, whose name is printed by an official source, and whose identity is resolved: it is not a possible duplicate of another entry awaiting a decision. Each entry shows its listings with the exchange list they come from and the date retrieved, the country of incorporation only where an official source states it (148 entries: not established), the official website where an official source gives it, and when its sources were retrieved (between 2026-10-07 and 2026-10-08). A retrieval date is when we downloaded a list, not the list's own date: where an exchange's list is dated earlier than its retrieval, the entry gives that date and its listing status is as of that date. It has no figures, so nothing on it has been financially verified or reviewed.

Financial status on each entry describes this site's coverage only: “Financial statements not yet collected”, or “not yet available on this site” where reports were found but cannot yet support publication, with the reason. It never means the company itself has not reported.

Identity rules. Two listings belong to one company only when they share an ISIN, carry the same issuer identifier on the same exchange's own list, or a recorded decision cites the issuer's or exchange's own evidence. Similar names never merge companies; possible duplicates are held back until decided. Funds, ETFs, bonds, preference-only lines and over-the-counter lines are not companies here, on every exchange. Depositary receipts are linked to their issuer only with evidence.

What “identity resolved” does not mean. It means the listings were linked or kept apart under these rules. It does not mean every field is known — country of incorporation, legal name or website show “Not established” or “Not recorded” where no official source collected states them — and it does not mean every listing of the company has been collected.

Companies seen only on A2X. A2X lists securities whose main listing is elsewhere, mostly on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, whose list is not yet collected. These companies are shown with their A2X listing only; where A2X's security file states the primary listing, the entry says so and that the listing's details are not shown.

Not complete. Several exchanges are not yet covered, including the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Egyptian Exchange, so companies listed only there do not appear, and other listings of the companies shown may be missing.

Coverage by exchange

What was collected from each exchange in scope, and when. Counts are published entries with a current listing on that exchange; a company listed on two exchanges is counted on both.

Companies are listed alphabetically and are not ranked or compared, because year ends, presentation currencies and line definitions differ. Each profile covers the latest two audited annual periods collected, plus the comparative year those filings print. Amounts are shown in each company's presentation currency and are not converted.

Banks, insurers and investment companies

Financial companies are shown in their own statement formats, with each line labelled as the issuer prints it:

The overview of a financial company therefore shows the measure its own statements headline, under that label, and leaves out measures the statements do not print (such as operating profit for most banks). No ratios are calculated.

How figures are chosen

Every figure is transcribed as printed in a cited filing and kept with its document, page and reading. For each year, one filing supplies the whole statement column, chosen by fixed rules — never by which file was added last:

  1. A filing that another signed, final filing of the same basis and currency explicitly restates for that year gives way to the restating filing.
  2. Then signed, final full statements; then a signed summary; then statements, and lastly summaries, whose final status is not confirmed.
  3. Then the filing printing more figures for that year; then the later document; then a fixed tie-break.

Where a filing's statement page disagrees with its own notes and signed audited statements resolve it, the signed figure is shown (marked ‡) and the other figure is kept in a note beside the row. Per-share figures and share counts may come from a second filing for the same year (marked †). Statement lines are never filled in from another filing.

How figures are shown

Warnings and sources

Going-concern paragraphs, unconfirmed final status, changes in operations and source conflicts are summarised above each profile's figures, with the full wording and page available. Each source card links to the original file on the issuer's or the exchange's website; each card shows when its link was last checked against our archived copy, and a link that did not return the archived file is marked as not confirmed. Retrieval dates are never shown as publication dates.
